Introduction to Versailles

Once the capital city of France, Versailles is best known today for its world-famous palace, the Chateau de Versailles.

The Palace of Versailles was originally built in 1623 by Louis XIII.  It has since grown to become the most awe inspiring palace in the world. In 1682, the Chateau de Versailles became the official residence of the Court of France.

The Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War I, was signed at Versailles Palace on June 28, 1919.

The city of Versailles is located south west of Paris France in the Yvelines d├ępartement of Ile-de-France.
