The RER (Réseau Express Régional)is a vast network of commuter trains that operate across the Ile-de-France (the Paris Metropolitan area).  The system consists of five lines, labelled "A" through "E".  The RER system complements Paris' extensive metro line system, which has 14 lines in total.

The RER system has 258 stations.  The lines cover a distance of 587 km (365 miles).  Single and multi-day passes can be purchased at most stations.  The costs of transit passes vary from 8,50 Euro for one day with three zones to 47 euro for 5 days and all six zones.  Transit passes include unlimited use of the RER and metro systems.
