Jeremy R. Baker: We express our disappointment that S.304 has failed to pass the House

Dear editor,

As President of the Vermont Retail Lumber Dealers Association (VRLDA), I write to express our disappointment in the recent failure of S.304 to pass the House. This bill promised to have a significant impact on workforce development in our state.

The VRLDA represents locally owned, independently operated lumber and building materials (LBM) dealers, and we are strong supporters of S.304. This legislation aimed to create a cohesive system that would connect academics with career and technical education, a critical step in addressing the growing gap between employment and skilled workers in Vermont.

In our industry, as in many others, there are countless job openings that offer good salaries and benefits, but there simply aren’t enough qualified people to fill them. For too long, Vermont has seen its talented youth leave our state in search of opportunities elsewhere. S.304 provided a beacon of hope by providing a clear path for our young people to get good-paying jobs and build lifelong careers here in the Green Mountains.

The VRLDA has not been idle in this matter. We actively engage with schools and students through our Building Bright Futures initiative, highlighting the rewarding careers in the LBM and construction industries. In addition, we have tirelessly advocated for S.304, met with lawmakers, and written numerous letters urging action on this pressing issue.

It is disheartening that despite our efforts and the clear need for action, Senate Bill 304 did not pass the House this year. The VRLDA will remain committed to workforce development initiatives and advocating for policies that support the growth of our industries and the prosperity of our state, and we encourage you to join this effort.

Regards,

Jeremy R. Baker
